FLIGHTS OF FANCY

New Art Exhibit opens at American Jewish University

The FLIGHTS OF FANCY exhibition, featuring installation works by Dori Atlantis, Karen Frimkess Wolff, Ruth Lercher Bornstein, and Anita Segalman, opens August 16th at American Jewish University’s Platt and Borstein Galleries at 15600 Mulholland Drive in Bel Air.  The public is invited to meet the artists at the free opening reception on Sunday, August 16, from 3 to 5 pm.  Gallery hours are Sunday through Thursday, 10 am to 4 pm and Friday 10 to 2 pm through October 14.

Dori Atlantis and Karen Frimkess Wolff collaborate on a series of site specific installations for the Platt Gallery.  This work refers to landscape and natural forms. Atlantis is known for her mixed media sculpture and digital imagery while Wolff produces constructions and drawings.  Their installations have been gaining attention in public spaces in Southern California.  Both Atlantis and Wolff became active collaborators in the design and construction of installations after meeting while teaching art to visually impaired adults at the Braille Institute in Los Angeles.

Ruth Lercher Bornstein’s intimate paintings are aglow with color. In describing her way of working she says, “Through all of my many years of painting I have tried to follow a thread of what is true, what is me.  There is dark and there is light. And there are surprises.” As both writer and painter, Bornstein’s work is widely published by Harper Collins and others.

Anita Segalman declares her lino-cut images are realistic even though she has “no hesitation to color a locomotive blue or to permit a corn stalk to metamorphose into a palm.”   Known for collaborating with poets to produce artist pulled lino-cut prints, Segalman’s books are in the Getty Museum collection.
